What is this subject about?

In this Politics elective students will:

  • Learn about different types of actors in the global community, with a focus on the UN.
  • Explore different types of power and how global actors can wield these to further their interests.
  • Investigate the tension between state sovereignty and responsibility in the global community's approach to crises.
  • Delve into the ethical issue of human rights, understanding who defines these rights and evaluative the degree to which global actors are upholding their responsibilities.
  • Learn to distinguish what is and isn’t terrorism, exploring the causes of this global crisis.
  • Make use of real-world case studies to deepen their understanding.

Why might I be interested in this elective?

This elective would interest students who are:

  • Engaged with global issues in our world or have a particular interest in social justice.
  • Interested in understanding why global actors, including states and the United Nations, act the way they do.
  • Interested in exploring power dynamics and considering the tools that one actor might use to influence another.
  • Interested in pursuing Politics pathways into their VCE and beyond.

  • Engaging in class discussion to share ideas and explore new perspectives.
  • Expressing your understanding of key terms and concepts in short answer responses.
  • Completing an extended response, analysing, or evaluating the actions of different global actors in response to a political issue.
  • Engaging in collaborative research to explore a case study of interest to you.
  • Utilise political thinking skills and use these to expand your thinking.
