Media - Photography


Why might I be interested in this elective?

Have you ever taken a photo and thought "oh wow, that's pretty good!"?

Well, after you've taken this course, you'll be saying that after all your photos!

Key to making any photograph is understanding how the camera works, it's relationship with light, what makes and interesting composition, and how you as the photographer can take control of your choices.

You'll learn to use a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera with confidence by understanding the technical components.

You will learn a simple workflow to help you keep track of the thousands of photographs you take, you'll use digital editing software to take yoru great photos and make them amazing.

You'll look at other photographers works, learn and understand how and why they made their images and use this as inspiration in your own work as you develop your ideas and creative style.

What is this subject about?

The course will include:

  • in-depth and hands on practical examinations of the different technical aspects of digital photography
  • exploration of different lighting styles with portrait sessions in our photography studio using professional lighting equipment
  • the investigation of the works of prominent photographers
  • the development of a project examining themes and ideas developed by you, the artist.


How will I demonstrate my learning 

The course is organised into different thematic photographic assignments:

  • The Visual Diary: in which you will organise your technical experiments, conduct research, develop your ideas, and reflect on your own work

  • Written Response: for which you will analyse and interpret the works of other photographers

  • The Personal Project: this will give each student the opportunity to develop their own style while visually investigating a them or idea that they research and develop themselves which regularly receiving feedback from their teacher and peers

Possible VCE Pathways in this learning area

This subject is a direct pathway to VCE Media. However, all the subjects in Visual Arts Electives can prepare you for VCE studies such as; Art Creative Practice, Product Design & Technology, Visual Communication Design. The courses have many common components and transferrable skills.

This subject was formally known as Digital Photography - it has been renamed Media - Photography to help with understanding the VCE pathways and more current terminology used in the creative field.
