The Contemporary Songwriter

What is this subject about?

The Contemporary Songwriter will give you an opportunity to learn about: 

  • Being a DJ
  • Mixing music
  • Recording techniques
  • Covering a song 
  • Song writing

You will explore the elements of song writing such as melody, chords, harmony, form, hooks, bass, riffs, and lyrics. 

You will learn to mix, record, cover and arrange, as well as compose a song  using various devices and applications. 

You will listen to and analyse the classic songs from the popular music world. 

You must have a strong musical background, experience in playing a musical instrument, an understanding of music notation and have an ability to read music.

Why might I be interested in this elective?

Do you love contemporary music? Are you creative? Do you want to understanding music technology? Do you prefer to create music rather than perform? Do you sit at home and write songs?  If so, this subject is perfect for you. This could the start of a career in jingle writing, song writing, DJing, arranging, record producing or studio engineering.  Or you may just want to record your own music at home.

This subject takes aspects of what takes place VCE Music Performance Contemporary, VCE Music Inquiry and VCE Music Composition. It will give you a great idea of what is involved in these subjects, as well as thorough preparation.
