The Musician

What is the subject about?

This Music course aims to further develop the core elements of Musicianship, Analysis, Solo and Group Performance. 

  • You will undertake a range of activities incorporating the above skills. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in performing in solo and ensemble situations. 
  • You will be able to choose one co-curricular music ensemble per week to use as your group performance ensemble which will form part of the class timetable.
  • You will then be required to be in class for 6 period per cycle, with the other 2 periods used for flexible learning. 
  • You will use technology along with practical skills to create an arrangement of a piece for your class. 
  • You, along with your instrumental music teacher will be responsible for selecting your solo performance repertoire which will be performed at the end of the unit. 
  • You will develop your music language skills in aural comprehension and theory
  • You will learn to analyse music through the discussion of music concerts and performances by professional musician.

Why might I be interested in this elective?

This subject is perfect if you currently learn an instrument and would like to develop skills and knowledge that will assist you to become a better solo and group performer. You could then go on and study VCE Music or you could apply the techniques you have learned when completing music exams, playing in soirees or participating in ensembles.

How will I demonstrate my learning?

  • presentation of a chosen music investigation topic. 
  • an end of semester solo performance recital 
  • a musicianship practical and written test in aural comprehension and theory
  • an arrangement and performance for a group of instruments

* Please note that you must be taking individual music lessons on a chosen instrument to complete this subject. Your individual teacher is responsible for preparing you for all of the performance requirements of the course.

Possible VCE Pathways in this Learning Area

This subject  takes aspects of what takes place in VCE Music Performance Repertoire,  VCE Music Performance Contemporary and VCE Music Inquiry. It will give you a great idea of what is involved in these subjects, as well as thorough preparation.

Note - there are no Year 9/10 Elective pre-requisites for students to undertake the VCE courses listed below. These are suggested pathways only
