Sports Science

What is this subject about?

This subject focuses on the relationship between sport science and improving performance. Students will investigate the physiological responses of the body to exercise and analyse physical and mental strategies to improving sporting performance. Examples of topics covered in this elective are:

  • Functional anatomy including the structure and function of the cardiorespiratory system
  • Biomechanics and skill acquisition principles 
  • Fitness components
  • Sports psychology

Students will engage in practical activities with the use of apps and technology to perform qualitative movement analysis' with a focus on improving sporting performance. 

Why might I be interested in this elective? 

This elective is designed for students who have an interest in the sports science field and aim to continue on with their studies in Physical Eduction into their senior years. 

If you are interested in the science behind how the body moves and understanding ways to train to improve sporting performance, this is the subject for you! 

How will I demonstrate my learning?

Students will demonstrate their learning through written tasks on the topics covered, these include:

  • Group presentations
  • Analytical tasks
  • Practical reflections 
  • Structured questions

Possible VCE Pathways in this Learning Area

This subject provides a pathway to VCE Physical Education Units 1-4. Please note, however, that students must achieve an ‘A’ standard in Year 9 Science in order to undertake VCE Physical Education Units 1 and 2 in Year 10 as an accelerated VCE course.

Note - there are no Year 9/10 Elective pre-requisites for students to undertake the VCE courses listed below. These are suggested pathways only.
