What is this subject about?

  • The $20 Boss elective offers students an opportunity to develop entrepreneurial thinking.
  • It develops skills that employers value highly and are continually 'in demand' in the ever-evolving 21st century workplace.
  • Students will investigate types of businesses, entrepreneurs, and social enterprises.
  • Students work in teams or individually and with their teacher to develop and run their own 'start up' business, using a $20 investment of capital to start their business idea.
  • Students have the opportunity to:
    • learn about entrepreneurship and successful entrepreneurs;
    • discover how Social Enterprises operate;
    • generate business ideas, to develop and prototype a product or service;
    • survey and assess the market and determine appropriate pricing;
    • develop and present a “Pitch” for their business idea;
    • bring their product or service to market during the trading phase;
    • reflect on their business idea and their entrepreneurial journey.

Why might I be interested in this elective?

This Commerce elective would interest students who:

  • are keen to learn more about running their own business, conducting market research, planning and prototyping, budgeting and, finally, bringing a product to the market.
  • like to think about consumer behaviour and choices that businesses make.
  • like working on an extended project over time and applying their understanding in a practical way.
  • are interested in entrepreneurship.
  • have a desire to use entrepreneurship to improve lives and communities.
  • have an interest in pursuing Commerce pathways into their VCE and beyond.

How will I demonstrate my learning?

  • Researching entrepreneurial skills, different business types and social enterprises.
  • Giving a “Shark Tank” style pitch of your product or service idea.
  • Developing a business from initial concept to market and reflecting upon the process.
