Visual Communication Design


Why might I be interested in this elective?

If you enjoy design and drawing you may be interested in this elective. Maybe you wish to learn about digital platforms for creating graphics, typography, illustration and publishing should consider undertaking Visual Communication Design.

Students may have prior experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or other platforms, or they maybe an absolute beginner. Either are welcome!

This elective provides students with a hands on learning experience. Students will make graphic products for a real client. This project based learning will enable students to collaborate with students and/or teachers, in order to fulfil an authentic design brief. This experience replicates working with a client in order to design for the clients needs. Students will understand the design process from conception to production/publication.

Some possible design projects:

  • Graphic posters
  • Illustrative products 

The teacher will locate the design projects for each semester and liaise with the Ruyton clients in order decide the projects; and the students will have choice over their selected design project. Students can work in groups or individually for the production of their selected project.

What is this subject about?

1. Design Process

  • Students will learn about what is involved in a design brief.
  • Students will organise the steps and stages of design in a visual diary or a digital folio.

2. Refinement and Resolutions

  • Students will develop an understanding of how to refine, resolve and produce final presentations in digital formats.
  • Students will evaluate their design solutions

3. Production

  • Students will learn how to produce their final product and present in an appropriate and professional manner.

4. Presentation

  • Students will present their final products to the client and their target audience.

Possible VCE pathways in this learning area

This subject is a direct pathway to VCE Visual Communication Design. However, all the subjects in Visual Arts Electives can prepare you for VCE studies such as; Art Creative Practice, Product Design & Technology, Visual Communication Design and Media. The courses have many common components and transferrable skills.

This subject was formally known as ABCs of Design - it has been renamed Visual Communication Design to help with understanding the VCE pathways and more current terminology used in the creative field.
