Year 9 Health and Physical Education
Curriculum Overview
Health Education:
The Year 9 Health Education program is designed to empower students with the knowledge and skills to make informed, responsible choices about their health and wellbeing. The course explores real-world issues relevant to adolescents, including healthy and respectful relationships, mental health, body image, nutrition, drug and alcohol education, and sun safety.
Students are encouraged to develop effective communication skills, take ownership of their decisions, and understand how their actions impact both themselves and others. Through interactive learning experiences, students build confidence, resilience, and a deeper awareness of the challenges and responsibilities they face as young adults in today’s world.
Physical Education:
As students transition to Year 9, the Physical Education program reflects the changing needs and trends of physical activity participation of teenage girls. The curriculum moves from a more teacher-directed sport focus to a greater emphasis on exploring recreational activities and wider physical activities with an inquiry focus.
Through a variety of physical activities, students learn to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative, teamwork, and empathy. They are guided to understand what they are learning, why it matters, and how to improve—helping them achieve success and connect physical activity to broader aspects of life, including wellbeing, academic performance, and personal development.
By embedding the value of being active from a young age, students are more likely to form positive, lasting relationships with physical activity, making it a natural and enjoyable part of their lives.
Students are introduced to a range of new activities, involving a variety of practical activities and a range of sports. These include -
- Investigating ways to be active for life through recreational activities such as Pilates, golf, dance, yoga and frisbee
