Year 9 History

What is this subject about?

In Year 9 History students consider the developing Australian identity and our place in the modern world from 1750-1918.

Students explore a period of rapid change in the ways people lived, worked, and thought including:

  • How the era of nationalism and imperialism shaped the expansion of European power globally.
  • The impact of colonisation on First Nations Peoples and the conflict that emerged with European efforts to shape an 'Australian' identity.
  • Perspectives on and impacts of the Federation of Australia, with a focus on which people were included and excluded from our Constitution and ‘nation-building’.
  • The causes and course of World War I (1914–1918), the “war to end all wars”, with a focus on lesser-known stories of Australians impacted by this conflict.

These concepts will be explored through the following depth studies:

  • Making and Transforming the Australian Nation (1750–1914)
  • First Nations’ Experiences: Colonisation and Federation (1750-1914)
  • First World War (1914–1918)
