Turning the Tide: the Literature of Rebellion and Protest

What is this subject about?

  • Literature involves the close and contextual study of great works of literary and media works (so novels, poetry and other media)
  • students will study texts from the canon (classical literature) as well as contemporary works
  • students will analyse these works as well as producing their own, and analysing the way social conditions have prompted artistic responses that have sought to change their times and the minds of others

Why might I be interested in this elective?

It will extend confident readers and engage enthusiastic readers as they encounter a range of works, forms and genres. It will also ask you to consider how you might create change as an artist, and what how creating something beautiful can also mean creating something powerful. You will learn about strange wanderings in 19th Century gardens, sad wanderings on lonely farmhouses and angry music videos in dark garages...all in the name of thinking about writing, language and creativity.

How will I demonstrate my learning?

You will write

  • an essay
  • a 'close reading'
  • your own creative work

You will also contribute to small group and class discussion.

Possible VCE Pathways in this Learning Area

Note - there are no Year 9/10 Elective pre-requisites for students to undertake the VCE courses listed below. These are suggested pathways only.

Literature at year 9/10 is a useful 'taste' of what VCE Literature is like, and can help with making a decision about whether that is the right course for you. You would also find it a useful complement to your study of VCE English, which includes the study of literature and creative writing.
